Renters insurance has long been written by commercial carriers, but multi-unit property owners are increasingly retaining the risk themselves. Giles Hobday, account manager at USA Risk Group, and Matt Baldwin, chief underwriting officer at Swain & Baldwin Insurance, discuss the growing interest in renters insurance captives, the profitability these programmes can generate, and the practical solutions now available to help owners enter the captive market.

One of the unique perks of owning or working with a captive insurance company is the opportunity to attend board meetings in destinations that are not only practical but also enjoyable. Being based in Grand Cayman, I am very fortunate to not only call this beautiful island my home, but I also get to welcome my clients here for their Board meetings year after year. However, sometimes captive boards may want to travel further afield. Many destinations outside of the U.S. make a routine board meeting a great way to connect with other board members and captive industry professionals, combining business with a touch of leisure. I recently asked some of my peers and colleagues across the industry about their preferred places to meet and the little things that make all the difference. The answers painted a picture of some truly special spots.
